Day 2RomeRome Sightseeing and Free Time: Follow in the footsteps of the pilgrims who for centuries have gazed in wonder at the inspiring Vatican City and St. Peter's Basilica, one of the holiest sites in Christendom. This morning we embark on an included sightseeing tour in the company of a Local Specialist, where we will see Michelangelo's magnificent Pieta, hewn from the most "perfect" block of Carrara marble. We venture into Ancient Rome to see Circus Maximus, where the thundering noise of chariot races once filled the air, and visit the imposing Colosseum. The afternoon is yours to explore the city on your own terms. Founded by Pope Pius XI in 1926, this museum has a remarkable collection of artworks and historical relics from missions all over the world.
